Breif Semiotics

Semiotics

Representation is the way people, groups, cultural ideas, are shown by the media.
Mediation is the process where media institutions are the go between, they select and organise material for their audience.

I found that the understanding of what visual codes signal a premium pack when evaluating food packets. A semiotic analysis can establish guidelines for assessing pack shape, graphic layout, colour as more likely to signify premium value to consumers. Semiotics creates analytic categories in order to sift through the work. The creation of categories allows more nuance and objectivity in assessing entries.

The problems with mediated reality:
False expectations
Could be completely made up

Denotes - literal meaning of a sign
Connotes- interpreted meaning of a sign

Iconic- work through resemblance
Symbolic - learned
Indexial- casual link

Signs are ploysemic.
